Europe is hands down the favorite destination for international travel among citizens of the United States. Over twelve million Americans visit Europe annually. There is not one single reason for this, rather a large collection of reasons. The Old World offers a cultural and historical backdrop, that is not readily available in the United States. The stunning medieval architecture, the local fare, the art and the fashion, are among the top reasons to visit Europe. Narrowing down the exact place in Europe is another task entirely.
The Tower of London is the home of England’s Crown Jewels, as well as the long time former destination, where members of the Royal Family would have been arrested or put to death. It comes as no surprise, that there are recorded sightings of the ghost of the headless Sir Walter Raleigh, and one of Henry VIII wives, Anne Boleyn.
If your goal is to visit a single museum, make it the world renowned Louvre in Paris. This is the home of The Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa, as well as, many artifacts and antiquities from Egypt, Rome, the Orient, Greece and Etruscan cultures. While in Paris be sure to visit the Eiffel Tower in all of it’s three hundred and seventeen meters of glory.
The Acropolis in Greece is another must see. This is the home of the ruins of the Parthanon, Temple of Nike, the Propylaea and the Erectheion. These are massive tributes to the Grecian culture, and are a sight to behold.
Be sure to hit Tivoli Gardens in Denmark, preferably at night, for the most spectacular visit to this amusement park. Amsterdam is the home of the Anne Frank House. Anne Frank and her family hid in the secret attic of an office building, until the Nazis found the Frank family and sent them off to concentration camps, where they would later die from various causes. The house in which the family lived, has been restored, and offers presentations and photos throughout. The diary Anne kept with her thoughts and bravery, was found and preserved, offering the insight into the exhibit.
In 1508, commissioned by Pope Julius II, appointed Michelangelo, who in turn painted the an illustration of the entire Bible, while laying on his back. This is found at the Sistine Chapel.
Your vacation will not be complete without a visit to Leeds Castle. This castle has been dubbed the most adorable castle in the world. The castle was built in 1119 on the banks of a lake. Leeds Castle has been the home of several of British Royalty. Henry VIII was the tenant of this stunning castle, his portrait hangs in the Banqueting Room, which happens to be named after him as well. Now Leeds Castle is the venue for social gatherings, conferences and weddings.
