Besides the major cities in Europe that seem to be crowded and distracting, there is no shortage of small cities that offer the history and culture that is in Europe. Being smaller destinations, they are sometimes overlooked by the tourism crowds, which can make for a peaceful and relaxing vacation, without missing out on things to do and see. If you are wanting to get away from the large crowds for awhile, here are some places you should consider.
Avignon, France is a relatively small populated city with under one hundred thousand people. Avignon is located in southern France, and is called the capital of the Cote du Rhone wine region. The most popular attractions in Avignon are the Palace of the Popes from the 14th century, and the Avignon Bridge from the 12th century. This is a beautiful medieval walled city, which also houses an archaeological museum and spectacular views of the ancient city.
Roughly 2km south of France on the banks of the Rhine river is Basel. This location is in Switzerland, and has a host of things to do and see. The city was based on merchant guilds from the early 1200s, and many have been turned into exquisite restaurants. There are festivals held through the year including, the Fasnacht, which is a three day masked carnival and is based on Contemporary Art, and is the largest of it’s kind in the world. Museums are abundant in Basel and include; the Swiss Sports Museum, Basel Cartoon Museum and the Museum der Kulturen Basel, which is the largest collection of European and non-European culture.
The next destination on our trip through small European cities is Bergen, Norway. Bergen is a small waterfront city, that is a few kilometers from Oslo. The city is all about water and is famous for it’s aquariums. Bergen is based on scenery as well. Here you will find some of the most picturesque scenery that money can buy. The entire city is generally traveled by foot, and offers wonderful local cuisine and fare.
Bruges in Belgium is all about the scenery. The center of this city has maintained it’s medieval culture and style, while boasting the architecture, the age implies. You can travel around the city by the paddle steamer, Lamme Goedzak, and visit the nostalgic city of Damme.
Heidelberg, Germany is located in the Southeastern area, and is apart of the historic Castle Road.
Heidelberg Palace has been considered the romantic ruins. The castle ruins have not been fully restored, yet houses the pharmacy museum along with a wine bar, and a cafe. The Heidelberg University, built in 1712, and offers a museum, and several unique shops and cafes. There is also the student prison, where students were held for crimes such as, disturbing the peace and drinking.
So, if you are looking for that peaceful vacation, but still want to take in the architecture and culture of Europe, visit a few of these places, you wont be disappointed.
